The autonomous shuttle will be an important step toward bringing driverless technology to the masses. Unlike other self-driving technologies that are being developed for logistics or personal transport, autonomous shuttles will carry multiple passengers on scheduled urban and rural routes, providing a clean and safe public transit option to decongest city centers, reduce emissions, and serve areas that lack scheduled bus transportation systems.

The industry is fragmented, with most companies in the pre-revenue stage. It also is extremely competitive, with many start-ups successfully testing shuttles capable of Level 4 autonomy and ready with a marketable solution.
