Cancer with higher rates of recurrence are difficult to treat. Cancer remission can happen at the original site (ie, a locoregional recurrence) or in a different location (ie, as a metastatic disease). The timing as well as pattern of cancer mainly depends on cancer type and diagnosis stage. Therefore, cancer survivors are at a higher risk of developing a second primary cancer and these can occur due to several clinical factors such as initial treatment of primary cancer (for example, chemotherapy and radiation therapy), lifestyle habits (such as smoking, obesity) and genetic factors. Such recurrences can be prevented through regular consultations with primary care physicians, lifestyle interventions, cancer as well as genetic counseling.

Improvements in cancer treatments and availability of supportive care has increased the cancer survival rates significantly. There are about 15 million cancer survivors globally and it is estimated to reach 20 million by 2025. However, there are huge disparities amongst cancer survivors mainly associated with cancer-related health problems with pre-existing conditions and problems related to aging. Therefore, strategies and initiatives to improve quality of care has become a priority amongst survivorship advocates and policy makers. In addition, cancer recurrence are one of the major concerns for patients as well as caregivers, with the recurrence rates varying between different types of cancer. These rates are also dependent on cancer stage, histology, genetic factors, patient-related factors, and treatments.
