Globally, hospital workers are reeling under the pressure of the pandemic. Burnouts and long-standing problems have also resulted in some staff members permanently leaving the healthcare workforce, exacerbating the shortages. Others are switching jobs, opting for higher pay, making healthcare staffing recruitment and retention a major challenge for hospitals – operationally and financially. Digital technology solutions supporting healthcare staff is therefore becoming increasingly important to support hospitals.

Existing solutions can alleviate staff workloads and help in reducing burnouts. These include improvements in staffing using workforce management tools, such as scheduling solutions, improved work efficiency by use of communication, collaboration and case management tools, and digital ambient scribing tools, as well as by delegating tasks, or spreading workload using virtual care solutions, or automation solutions such as patient room automations, and hospital logistics robots (aka service robots in the robotics industry). Scheduling solutions and robotics solutions are being offered globally by a variety of players, who are all vying for a larger piece of the pie, leading to a highly fragmented, but high-growth market!
