The growing network of international policies, targets, and standards that seek to promote environmentally friendly farming practices by either punishing or rewarding companies for their sustainable strategies, or lack thereof, are driving the innovation and development of Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Technologies, which are incorporating recent digital and computing advances into the fight against climate change.

Entering a new era of international commitment towards environmentally conscious growth, the Paris Agreement set ambitious but much-needed targets to progressively reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on national plans (known as Nationally Determined Contributions). Consequently, carbon pricing instruments were introduced to reduce global emissions by applying a price to the GHGs emitted by a certain activity, leading to the creation of several systems across the world based on either carbon taxes or Emissions Trading Systems (ETS) articulated around carbon crediting.

Policies play a crucial role in promoting sustainability, and recent legislation such as the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in the US are positive steps towards this goal. These laws focus on reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and investing in green infrastructure. Additionally, initiatives such as the Paris Climate Agreement, United Nations Sustainability Development Goals, and corporate sustainability reporting directives aim to hold businesses and governments accountable for their environmental impact.
